The Black Rose Acoustic Society

For over 30 years, The Black Rose Acoustic Society has been the home of live, handmade acoustic music in the Pikes Peak Region. We host twice-monthly concerts, jams, and classes through the year. Nestled in the tall Colorado pines, the down-home atmosphere of our log-cabin concert hall provides a family-oriented setting unsurpassed in friendliness and congeniality.

The Mild Thornberrys is a tongue-in-cheek name that we Thornberrys gave ourselves because so many people ask if we’re related to the Wild Thornberrys of comedy TV – we’re not. Our 5-piece group consists of Russell and Sharleen Thornberry, the mom and dad; Darren, the son; Michelle, the daughter; and Barry Patterson, the son-in-law, married to Michelle. We are all singers and songwriters, and each has had a music career in one form or another, both individually and collectively.

Russell played the southern coffeehouse circuit in the early ‘60s, joined the New Christy Minstrels in 1964, and launched his solo career a year later. On a week’s vacation to western Canada, he was offered a singer-songwriter album contract with MCA Records as well as an opportunity to host his own weekly music television program. It was just what he was looking for. The rest of the story was his meeting Sharleen Gibson, also a traveling musician, and they married in November of 1969. Russell had several #1 hits in Canada and won numerous BMI music awards for songs he had written.

Next came the kids: first Michelle in 1973, and Darren in 1975.

Both of them followed in their parents’ footsteps and became amazing singer-songwriters. Collectively, we have released

19 albums of our original music. While we all have individual music pursuits, it is a special treat when we come together to showcase our collective talents. We’re excited to be doing a concert for the Black Rose Acoustic Society on January 9, 2026.
