INNER STATES
Copyright 1998 Michael E. Walker
Verse 1
With the window rolled down , wind in my
hair; the sun on my face, cold
mountain air.
When I’m thinking of you it’s better out there.
Does falling snow sense a thrill in the ride?
Do Aspen groves feel family pride?
With love in my heart I open up wide.
Chorus 1
My inner states bleed into the red of a
setting sun.
When I wake does the day start or has it already begun.
Tires against pavement.
Humming of my mind.
Both movie and screen, that is the key.
Verse 2
Headlights on not to long before dawn;
skeletal trees rush on by and are gone;
beyond these beams only darkness, on and on.
Burn of hot coffee spilled down on my chest
flickering billboards; commercial unrest.
What I feel inside…manifest.
Chorus 2
My inner states flow into the glow of
the morning sun.
When I awake does the day start, or has it already begun.
The violence of snowflakes.
Electrical chemical static.
Behind these eyes, that’s where I see.
Bridge
If only I could stand for a time outside
of me.
I imagine I would see things, differently.
Would the blues look bluer?
Could the truth be truer?
New perception will set me free.
Verse 3
Tail of a comet strung out before me;
lights of the city, a manmade galaxy
Custom light show just for me.
Seat made of leather, I feel cashmere;
the pop in this can tastes exactly like beer.
Clouds clearing in the mirror.
Final Chorus
My inner states bleed into the red of a
setting sun.
When I awake yes the day starts, I’ll make it a fabulous one.
Floating through cloud banks.
A moment to give thanks.
Self-painted landscape of me.
Behind these eyes, endless possibility.
